My philosophy on handcrafted blown glass is that it is like royalty of the dark ages, insane, inbred and willful. My blown glass is made to be handled and enjoyed. Glassblowing will teach you anything you are willing to learn – plumbing, electrical, heat engineering, chemistry, psychology (of color), metal and woodworking. At times, glassblowing is a team sport. At other times it in an individual journey. It puts demands on your creativity, physical energy and heat tolerance. Glass has become my drug of choice.
My first experience working with glass was a stained glass class offered through Ford Motor Company. It didn’t take long for me to become dissatisfied with the flat surfaces and limited shapes. Since glassblowing has always interested me, I decided to try a glassblowing class. I liked the gentle gradation of color and the immediacy of the art form. The focus and intensity of this art are demanding as is the high heat levels.
As I create each hand made blown glass piece, I try to focus on the visual depth as the glass reflects, captures and magnifies light. At times in our history, glass has been valued more than human life. The artisans were treated as royalty, but murdered if they tried to share their secrets with others. You are limited only by your imagination, you can never say, “I’ve done it all.â€
I design my Blown Glass, Fused Glass & Custom Art Glass to be colorful. I like the interplay of light and color in glass. Cylinders have become my favorite shape because I find them easier to do and decorate the exterior surface. When I make bowls I have to concentrate more to get the glass colors I want on the inside, you have to think in reverse. Art is created through the trial and error process, this makes it demanding and expensive. Handblown glass with its compelling intensity and urgency in the making process is physically and mentally demanding, but well worth the effort.
Working with molten glass is an unbelievable thrill to those who have tried it, or observed a glass blower. The thrill and beauty of making glass objects is unique. The slightest laps in the intense concentration necessary to create in the art form can cause failure of all you hard work and effort. However, the controlled flick of the wrist or puff of air in the pipe can make an outstanding work of art. It gives me a great feeling of fulfillment when a bond of appreciation forms with a stranger as I am selling a piece to a person. I get a great uplift in seeing the joy and happiness of the buyer. Everywhere you look there is glass around you in windows, light bulbs, insulation, computer screens and TVs. It amazes me that something as ordinary as sand and heat that can be turned into great art.
